The Air Local Initiative by Mumbai First aims to address the growing challenge of air pollution in Mumbai through scientific assessment, hyperlocal monitoring, and evidence-based mitigation strategies. As part of the initiative, two highly pollution-affected areas Sion and Chandivali have been identified as pilot locations for detailed study and intervention.
The project is being implemented in partnership with Techknowgreen Solutions Ltd. to conduct hyperlocal air-quality studies that identify pollution hotspots and source contributions at the neighbourhood level. The initiative focuses on generating scientific data, developing localized action plans, and promoting targeted interventions to improve urban air quality and public health outcomes.
GROUND SURVEY (ACTIVITY MAPPING)
- 100% grid coverage completed (159 grids | 3,043 responses)
- ~70% emissions from residential & commercial combustion
Sion
- Dense residential + commercial
- Key sources: Cooking fuel, small businesses → 5
Chandivali
- Mixed land use
- Key sources: Construction, RMC plants
→ PM10
MOBILE MONITORING
- Completed across both study areas
- Captured real-time variation in pollution levels
- Validated ground observations and identified pollution patterns
Sion
- Continuous, clustered emissions (fine particles)
Chandivali
- Spread-out, dust-heavy emissions (coarse particles)
