Mumbai Happenings successfully hosted its 4th session yesterday at the IMC Babubhai Chinai Hall, focusing on the Netherlands’ experience of living below sea level. The event, well attended by a distinguished audience of around 90 people, was led by Consul General Bart de Jong, who shared the Dutch perspective on proactive planning, advanced water management techniques, and community involvement in addressing climate change and rapid urbanization.
Divisional Commissioner of the Konkan Region, Shri. P. Velrasu, and Joint CEO of MITRA, Aman Mittal, participated in the discussion, offering insights into how Mumbai can integrate some of the Netherlands’ best practices into its urban planning and development strategies. The session emphasized the importance of collaboration between countries, city authorities, and the private sector to effectively tackle climate change challenges.
Notable attendees included Jairaj Phatak, former BMC Commissioner; R. A. Rajeev, former MMRDA Commissioner; and Harshita Narvekar. Ex-Corporator BMC. The event began with a welcome address by Ashank Desai and concluded with remarks by Nandini. Sanjay, who was instrumental in organizing the session, skillfully moderated the discussion, raising critical questions about Mumbai’s vulnerability to rising sea levels and the lessons that can be drawn from the Dutch experience

After 2 successful sessions, the third session of Mumbai Happenings was about the Transition from IPC to BNS. The speakers were Adv Anand Desai, Managing Partner , DSK Legal , and Mr. Satish Mathur IPS (Rtd), Former DGP Maharashtra.
This transition represents not only a change in the legal framework but also a step towards modernizing our justice system to better reflect the needs and values of contemporary India. With BNS, we aim to address the limitations and challenges posed by the IPC, ensuring a more efficient, transparent, and just legal system for all citizens.
The session was not just a discussion but an opportunity for all of us to engage, question, and learn. We explored the intricacies of this legal transition, with a shared goal of fostering a more equitable and just society. Mumbai First, a prominent non-profit organisation committed to the betterment of Mumbai and its suburbs, is delighted to announce the revival of its Knowledge Series, Mumbai Happenings, this year. With a renewed vigour, our initiative seeks to unravel the intricacies of urban challenges and pave the way for a more sustainable, inclusive, and thriving Mumbai. Mumbai Happenings is structured as a recurring set of lectures once in two months, with experts from a variety of disciplines collaborating on our endeavour to address the intricate problems facing Mumbai City and its surrounding areas. Our goal is to promote constructive discourse, knowledge exchange, and cooperative problem-solving for a more sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant urban environment through engaging lectures. The series is in collaboration with the Bombay Management Association and Blue Ribbon Movement.
The first session from the series revolved around the BMC Budget Analysis. The presentation, followed by an insightful panel discussion about the interpretation of the Budget and understanding the details of MCGM’s budgetary processes.
As we continue with the next discussion on Mumbai Happenings, we are proud to present the second session focusing on knowing more about the Right to Services Act. The Right to Services Act provides that the citizens shall be provided services by the State Government in a transparent, efficient and time bound manner. Our discussion will delve into its nuances, implications, and potential impact on the lives of Mumbaikars.
